Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars to come through, usually appearing somewhere between the ages of 17 and 21, though not everyone grows them at all.

Some wisdom teeth settle into place without any trouble, while others can become impacted, uncomfortable, or prone to infection when there isn’t quite enough room in the jaw to accommodate them. At J1 Dental, our team carefully assesses your wisdom teeth and talks you through the safest, most comfortable path forward.

What is Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Wisdom tooth removal is a dental procedure to extract one or more of these back molars when they’re causing, or likely to cause, problems. Wisdom teeth often need to come out when they:

  • Don’t have enough space to fully erupt
  • Become impacted in the gum tissue or jawbone
  • Come through at an awkward angle
  • Cause pain, swelling, or repeated infections
  • Contribute to gum disease or tooth decay
  • Put pressure on or damage nearby teeth
  • Lead to the formation of cysts or, in rare cases, tumours

Discomfort that comes and goes doesn’t necessarily mean the problem has resolved. The underlying issue can still be developing even when symptoms are quiet.

Treatment Options at J1 Dental

  • Monitoring. If your wisdom teeth are healthy and sitting in a good position, we may simply keep an eye on them at your regular check-ups rather than rushing into removal.
  • In-chair extraction. Many uncomplicated wisdom tooth extractions can be carried out comfortably in our dental chair using local anaesthetic.
  • Referral to a specialist. For cases that are more complex, deeply impacted, or carry a higher risk, we can refer you to a trusted oral surgeon to ensure the procedure is handled safely.

Benefits

Having troublesome wisdom teeth removed can help you:

  • Find relief from pain and ongoing discomfort
  • Avoid infections and swelling before they escalate
  • Keep neighbouring teeth safe from decay or unwanted movement
  • Lower the chance of gum disease in spots that are hard to clean
  • Prevent cysts or other complications in the jaw
  • Reduce the likelihood of a future dental emergency

How Wisdom Teeth Removal Works

  1. Thorough assessment and X-rays. We examine the angle, depth, and impaction of each wisdom tooth, along with its proximity to nearby nerves and sinuses.
  2. Anaesthesia for your comfort. Local anaesthetic keeps the area numb throughout, and sedation may be an option for certain cases where it’s clinically appropriate.
  3. The extraction itself. Teeth that have fully erupted are usually removed with a simple extraction, while impacted teeth may require a surgical approach, which can involve sectioning the tooth to remove it more easily.
  4. Aftercare guidance. We’ll walk you through how to manage swelling, what to eat, how to control any bleeding, and what medication to take.
  5. Healing and recovery. Most people are back to normal within two to five days, though this varies depending on how complex the extraction was.

FAQs

Does everyone have wisdom teeth?

Not necessarily. Some people develop all four, others only have one or two, and some don’t grow any at all.

The extraction itself shouldn’t hurt thanks to the anaesthetic, although you may notice some pressure during the procedure. Afterwards, mild soreness and swelling are a normal part of healing and can be managed easily.

Most impacted wisdom teeth do need removal, but if they’re healthy and not causing any issues, we may recommend simply monitoring them over time.

Straightforward extractions typically heal within two to three days. More involved surgical or impacted cases can take one to two weeks for full recovery.

The cost depends on how complex the extraction is and whether a specialist referral is needed, so we’ll provide a personalised quote and treatment plan once your assessment is complete. We are preferred providers for HCF, CBHS and NIB, with on-the-spot claiming available for all health funds. Benefits and coverage vary depending on your policy. Eligible children may also be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, worth up to $1,158.00. For more information about treatment costs, please visit our Pricing & Payment page.
