At J1 Dental, we know the idea of having a tooth taken out can feel worrying. Whether you need a straightforward extraction or a wisdom tooth removed, our dentists focus on keeping the experience calm, comfortable and safe from start to finish.

Not every patient develops wisdom teeth, and not every tooth needs to come out, but when a tooth is painful, infected or beyond saving, extraction can be the right choice to protect your smile and your long-term oral health.

What Is Tooth Removal?

Tooth removal (extraction) is the process of taking a tooth out of its socket when it can no longer be treated or kept in a healthy, functional state. It’s generally a last resort after other treatment options have been considered, used when a tooth is too damaged, decayed or misplaced to remain in the mouth safely.

General (non-wisdom) teeth are sometimes removed because of:

  • Decay too extensive to restore
  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
  • A crack or fracture that can’t be repaired
  • An infection or abscess that hasn’t responded to treatment
  • Overcrowding ahead of orthodontic treatment
  • A baby tooth that hasn’t fallen out on its own
  • A root canal treatment that hasn’t succeeded

Wisdom teeth are commonly removed when they:

  • Don’t have enough room to come through properly
  • Emerge at an awkward angle
  • Become impacted in the gum or jawbone
  • Cause pain, swelling, infection or decay
  • Put neighbouring teeth at risk of damage

Treatment Options at J1 Dental

Your dentist will recommend an approach based on the position and condition of the tooth.

  1. Simple extraction Suited to teeth that have fully come through and are easy to reach. Carried out under local anaesthetic, this is usually a quick procedure.
  2. Surgical extraction Needed for teeth that are broken, impacted, or sitting below the gum line. This can involve gently accessing surrounding bone or dividing the tooth into sections for easier removal.
  3. Replacement options after extraction If losing the tooth will affect your bite or your smile, we’ll talk through options such as:
  • Dental implants
  • Bridges
  • Partial dentures
  1. Monitoring instead of removal When a tooth, including a wisdom tooth, isn’t causing any problems, we may choose to keep an eye on it at your regular check-ups rather than remove it straight away

Benefits of Tooth Removal

Taking out a problem tooth can help you:

  • Relieve pain, swelling and infection
  • Protect the health of nearby teeth and gums
  • Chew more comfortably
  • Avoid future dental emergencies
  • Reduce the risk of cysts or bone damage linked to impacted wisdom teeth
  • Support better outcomes from orthodontic treatment
  • Maintain stronger oral health over the long term

How Tooth Removal Works

  1. Examination and X-rays. We check the tooth and surrounding area, taking X-rays to plan the safest way to remove it.
  2. Local anaesthetic. The area is thoroughly numbed so you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure.
  3. The extraction. For a simple extraction, the tooth is gently loosened and lifted out whole. For a surgical extraction, we may need to open the gum slightly and remove the tooth in smaller sections.
  4. Aftercare guidance. We’ll walk you through what to eat, how to manage any swelling, how to care for the extraction site, and whether pain relief is needed.
  5. Follow-up. Some extractions, particularly surgical or wisdom tooth removals, call for a follow-up visit to check that healing is progressing well.

Tooth Removal FAQs

Does having a tooth removed hurt?

The area is fully numbed beforehand, so you shouldn’t feel pain, just some pressure. Once the anaesthetic wears off, mild discomfort or swelling is common and easily managed.

Simple extractions typically heal within two to three days. Surgical or wisdom tooth extractions can take one to two weeks to heal fully.

Usually only for surgical extractions or wisdom teeth that were more deeply impacted. Where stitches are used, they’re often the dissolvable kind.

Pricing depends on the complexity of the extraction, so we’ll provide a personalised quote and treatment plan once your consultation is complete. We are preferred providers for HCF, CBHS and NIB, with on-the-spot claiming available for all health funds. Benefits and coverage vary depending on your policy. Eligible children may also be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, worth up to $1,158.00. For more information about treatment costs, please visit our Pricing & Payment page.

Most patients are back to their usual routine within a day of a simple extraction. If you’ve had a wisdom tooth or surgical extraction, it’s best to plan for one to two days of rest while you recover.
