What is a Root Canal Treatment?

Inside every tooth, beneath the enamel and dentine, sits the pulp: a soft core of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that keeps the tooth alive. When decay, a crack, or an injury allows bacteria to reach this pulp, it can become inflamed or infected, and if it isn’t treated, that infection can take hold permanently.

Left untreated, an infected tooth can lead to:

  • A constant, throbbing ache
  • Ongoing sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Swelling in the face or gums
  • An abscess forming at the root tip
  • Infection spreading further into the jaw or body

Root canal treatment clears out the damaged or infected tissue from inside the tooth and seals the space with a biocompatible filling material, bringing the bacterial count down to a level your body can heal from. This allows the tooth to stay in your mouth and keep doing its job, rather than needing to be removed.

Treatment Options at J1 Dental

Once we’ve assessed your tooth, we’ll talk you through the most suitable path forward, which may include:

  • Root canal treatment, our preferred option whenever the tooth has a reasonable chance of being saved, as it clears the infection while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.
  • Tooth extraction, considered only when the tooth is too damaged to restore. Should this be the case, we’ll discuss replacement options such as a dental implant, bridge, or denture.
  • Referral to an endodontist, for particularly complex root canal systems or difficult cases, we may refer you to a specialist who has advanced equipment and additional training for treating tricky root anatomy.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

  • Eases pain brought on by infection and inflammation
  • Contains the infection, stopping it from spreading further through your mouth or body
  • Keeps your natural tooth, so you can avoid extraction
  • Brings back normal biting and chewing function
  • Works out more cost-effective in the long run than replacing an extracted tooth
  • Helps prevent future problems, such as bone loss or your other teeth shifting out of place

How Root Canal Treatment Works

Most root canal treatments are completed across two to three visits, depending on how severe the infection is and the tooth involved.

  1. Assessment and pain relief. We start with X-rays to understand the extent of the problem, then apply a local anaesthetic so the whole procedure is comfortable.
  2. Cleaning the canals. The infected or damaged nerve tissue is carefully removed and the canals are disinfected to reduce the bacterial load.
  3. Shaping and medicating. The canals are shaped and cleaned again, then medicated to support healing before the next stage.
  4. Filling the canals. Once healthy, the canals are filled with a specialised, rubber-like material that seals the root system and prevents reinfection.
  5. Final restoration. A filling or crown is placed to protect what remains of the tooth. If a lot of the tooth’s structure has been lost, a crown is usually recommended to guard against fracture and support a long-lasting result.

We know root canal treatment can feel daunting, so we aim to keep the process as manageable and affordable as possible, including the option to spread appointments and payments over time. For more complex cases, we may recommend a referral to an endodontist to give your tooth the best possible outcome.

Root Canal Treatment FAQs

Is root canal treatment painful?

Not with modern techniques. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during treatment, and most patients notice significant relief once the infection has been addressed.

Typically two to three visits, though this can vary depending on how infected the tooth is and how complex the root canal system is.

Often, yes, particularly if the tooth has lost a significant amount of structure. A crown helps protect the treated tooth from cracking and keeps it working well for years to come.

The infection is likely to get worse, which can bring on more severe pain, swelling, and abscesses, and may eventually lead to bone loss or the need to extract the tooth altogether.

With good oral hygiene and the right restoration (usually a crown), a treated tooth can last many years, and often for life.

Root canal costs vary depending on the tooth and the complexity of treatment, so we’ll always give you a clear quote before you go ahead. We are preferred providers for HCF, CBHS and NIB, with on-the-spot claiming available for all health funds. Benefits and coverage vary depending on your policy. Eligible children may also be covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, worth up to $1,158.00. For more information about treatment costs, please visit our Pricing & Payment page.
