Children's Dentistry

At J1 Dental, looking after your family’s smiles for the long term is part of who we are, and that journey begins in the early years. We recommend parents start bringing their little ones in for check-ups from around age two. Positive, low-stress visits early on help children grow up trusting the dentist, feeling confident in the chair, and avoiding the dental anxiety that can develop later in life.

Our friendly team creates a relaxed, welcoming space designed with kids in mind. As a general dental practice, we’re able to look after the great majority of children’s dental needs right here in our Jimboomba clinic.

What Is Children's Dentistry?

Children’s dentistry covers the ongoing monitoring and care of oral health from infancy right through the toddler, primary school and teenage years. These formative years matter enormously, they’re when good brushing routines are formed, when jaws and teeth develop their shape, and when small problems can be caught before they turn into bigger ones.

At J1 Dental, our approach centres on prevention and education. We aim to make children feel like active participants in their own dental care, while giving parents clear, practical guidance they can use at home.

How Children's Dental Treatment Works

Here’s what to expect when you bring your child to J1 Dental:

1. A warm welcome We give your child time to settle in, look around the room, ask questions and feel at ease before anything else happens.

2. A gentle check-up Our dentist examines their teeth, gums, bite and overall oral health, always explained in a friendly, age-appropriate way.

3. A simple clean and a lesson We clean their teeth gently and walk them through brushing and flossing techniques in a way that’s easy to remember and repeat at home.

4. Preventive care where appropriate Depending on their age and risk factors, we may suggest fluoride treatment, sealants or X-rays.

5. Treatment, if it’s needed Should we find any decay or other concerns, we’ll talk you through every option in plain language. Most treatment can be completed in-house, with referral reserved only for the small number of cases that need specialist care.

6. Continuing care We recommend a check-up every 6 to 12 months to help keep your child’s smile healthy and their confidence growing.

Children's Dentistry FAQs

When should my child first visit the dentist?

Around age two is a good starting point, or sooner if you notice anything that concerns you. Early check-ups help your child grow comfortable with the dentist and let us track healthy tooth and jaw development from the start.

Most children benefit from a visit every 6 to 12 months, though this can vary depending on their individual risk of decay. Regular visits make it much easier to catch and prevent problems early.

In most cases, yes. As a general dental practice, we handle the majority of children’s dental needs in-house, from cleans and fillings to sealants, fluoride and emergency care. We’ll only refer your child elsewhere if specialist treatment is required. If a child has additional needs or an underlying medical condition, we may recommend referral to a specialist to ensure they receive the most appropriate care.

That’s a very normal reaction, and our team is well practised in helping children through it. We move at a pace that suits your child, use simple and reassuring language, and take extra time wherever it’s needed to help them feel safe.

Yes. Dental X-rays involve a very small amount of radiation and are considered safe for children when they’re clinically necessary. They give us valuable information about tooth development and can reveal issues that aren’t visible during a standard check-up.

We want dental care to stay affordable for every family. We are preferred providers for HCF, CBHS and NIB, with on-the-spot claiming available for all health funds. Benefits and coverage vary depending on your policy.

Many children are also eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which provides access to up to $1,158.00 in benefits over two years for eligible children. This can go towards check-ups, cleans, X-rays, fissure sealants, fillings and extractions.

Not sure if your child qualifies? Just ask our team and we’ll check your eligibility for you at the clinic.
