Orthodontics - Fixed Braces

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry dedicated to straightening teeth and correcting bite alignment. Braces do this gradually, using brackets and wires to guide teeth into a healthier, more even position. They remain one of the most reliable options for both straightforward cases and more complex movements.

Children have traditionally been assessed for braces around age 10, once most baby teeth have made way for adult teeth. Every child develops differently though, and some benefit from an earlier check, as young as 7 or 8, so crowding, jaw growth patterns, and bite issues can be picked up and managed early. At J1 Dental, we offer modern, low-profile braces designed to be more comfortable and work more efficiently than older systems.

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment straightens crooked or crowded teeth and improves how your upper and lower teeth meet. Fixed braces apply gentle, continuous pressure through brackets bonded to the teeth and a connecting wire, slowly repositioning each tooth over time. Because the movement is controlled and progressive, braces can correct anything from mild spacing issues to more involved bite problems, giving our dentists precise control over the final result.

Options for Braces at J1 Dental

Metal Braces

Metal braces use small brackets fixed to the front surface of each tooth and joined together with a thin archwire.

  • Suited to nearly every type of case, from mild to complex
  • Often move teeth more quickly than clear aligners
  • A dependable choice for moderate to severe crowding
  • Fixed in place, which makes them ideal for younger patients who might otherwise forget to wear removable aligners

Benefits of Braces

  • Gives you a straighter smile and a boost in confidence
  • Makes brushing and flossing easier, which helps lower the risk of decay and gum disease
  • Corrects bite problems such as overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites
  • Helps prevent uneven wear on your teeth and unnecessary strain on your jaw
  • Supports clearer speech and more comfortable chewing
  • Encourages healthier facial and jaw development in growing children
  • May help improve breathing and sleep quality for some patients
  • Can reduce the likelihood of more complex (and costly) dental work later on

How Braces Treatment Works

  1. Consultation and Records We start with photos, X-rays, and digital scans to get a full picture of your bite and teeth alignment.
  2. Treatment Planning Your dentist designs a personalised bracket and wire plan tailored to how your teeth need to move.
  3. Fitting Your Braces Brackets are bonded onto your teeth and the archwire is fitted to begin gently guiding them into position.
  4. Ongoing Adjustments Roughly every 4 to 8 weeks, you’ll come in so your dentist can tighten or replace the wire and keep treatment on track.
  5. Finishing Up with Retainers Once your teeth have reached their new position, you’ll wear a retainer to help lock in your results long term.

Orthodontics FAQs

Do braces hurt?
It’s common to feel some pressure or mild soreness for a day or two after each adjustment, but this discomfort is usually minor and settles quickly.
Most patients wear braces for anywhere between 12 and 24 months, depending on each individual patient’s treatment requirements.
You can eat most foods as normal, though it’s best to steer clear of very sticky or hard foods that could damage or dislodge the brackets.
Adjustment visits are generally scheduled every 4 to 8 weeks so your dentist can monitor progress and fine-tune your treatment.
Braces tend to be the better fit for more complex tooth movements, severe crowding, and younger patients, since they’re fixed in place and not reliant on patient compliance.

Orthodontic costs vary depending on the type of braces and the complexity of your case, so we’ll always provide a clear, personalised quote after your consultation.
